Space Hurps done for now

About a year ago, I bought a set of Mantic old convert-your-own sci fi zombies off ebay, and combined with the plague zombie sprues I got from the deadzone kickstarter I spent a day building a ton of them.

They have been cluttering up my to do-shelf ever since, only being nickled-and-dimed  in small groups, getting in the way and generally being a nuisance.

So I decided that enough is enough. Here are the last 18:

160122 mantic space hurps zombies 18 group

which brings the total up to 63 of the poor space hurps sufferers:

But is this a Herd, or a Horde?

Deadzone Rebs Sorak Swordmaster

One of the metal specialist or hero-types delivered in the second wave of the kickstarter rewards.

My name is Sebulba Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die!

The Dugs Sorak are the aliens that use their upper arms for legs, and have a lower set of more delicate arms for most other tasks. This one has rather large pair of cleaver-like swords. So I tried to make them look lighter with blue paint. Something like the blades used by the covenant hunters in Halo. Not sure if it worked.

Mantics’ metal minis do leave a bit to be desired, there is usually a lot of flash and often some of the parts are badly cast with prominent mould lines. I think they might use their moulds too long before making new ones, or maybe their mould makers are not all that good at their job. When cleaned up , though, the minis usually are quite nice.

This casting, though, was not all that bad. The sword arms naturally required pinning, and I also pinned the mini to the base.

I like the look of the Sorak, and I think they suit the classic “red devil” style look well. So I am doing them as such.

Space Hurps part the fifth.

The second blob of minis off the shelf today is 12 more of the Mantic Sci Fi Zombie Space Hurps conversions:

150715 hurps B

150715 hurps A

I really, really need to look into better photography.

At any rate, that makes 43 of those zombies done in all. 15-20 or so to go. I must admit they are getting a bit tedious to do, I expect the rest to wait awhile before I start them.

Fixing the little Mars Attacks! mixup, and more Zombies.

A few weeks ago I painted a squad of 10 Mars Attacks! Martian Grunts. Or so I thought. Turned out 7 of them were Martian Marines, and not Grunts at all. (In my defense, they are very similar, with the difference being that Marines have shoulder pads.

So I have at last finished the remaining troopers to complete both squads:

150620 Mars Attacks Grunts a7

7 Mars Attacks! Martian Grunts

150620 Mars Attacks marines b3

and the 3 remaining Marines. I have done the shoulder pads in yellow to make it easier to differentiate them from grunts in play, I have also redone the 7 previously finished Marines’ pads to match.

If the helmets seem a bit wonky in the pics , it is because I just popped them on for the photo. They are not glued in place yet, and might be a bit off centre.

When I paint I usually end up with several blobs of unused paint left on my palette. And I hate wastage.

I find that Zombies are great for this, as they can take most colours in their stride (especially as base coats), and a squad does not have to be uniform (sic!) Also mixing paints is fun and educational. It teaches you some colour theory without all the boring words.

150620 space hurps 5

These two resulted from the last sessions leftover paint. So far that makes 33 of the Space Hurps Positive done.

150620 brimstone hungry dead

and last but not least, 3 Hungry Dead from Shadows of Brimstone: Swamps of Death. So thats 4 of those done, twice as many left to go. These are the worst of the SoB-minis, being quite soft in the details.

Minis completed so far this month: 18

April!

So for April, I have been thinking about what to do for my resolutionary challenge.

First, I need to prep a lot of the new minis that have arrived, such as the second Bones kickstarter shipment. I also have the second wave of DreadBall Xtreme and the first wave of DUST totally untouched as of yet. Second. I want to go over a lot of the minis I already have primed black with a zenithal grey primer. I have already come to the conclusion that this is a great way to prime. Best of both worlds, so to speak.

But I broke my airbrush (screwed the nozzle a little too tight while cleaning it, breaking it in such a manner that half of the screw is stuck inside the airbrush thingy, and without the nozzle it only makes splatters. Oh well, a couple of cheap new ones have been ordered off ebay. So I am not getting any priming done at the moment.

And thirdly, I want to get some more painting done. To this end I think I might want to do something similar to Feburary, and do a load of different minis, and at least two DreadBall Teams.

I have not had a lot of hobby time these last couple of weeks, and most of what time I have had, has been spent prepping. Those Bones have mould lines that need carving off, bent bits to boil and unbend, and bases that need cutting.

But I have started to paint several minis, and even managed to finish two.

1: Reaper Bones 77020: Bathalian

150405 reaper bathalian prince john a150405 reaper bathalian prince john b 150405 reaper bathalian prince john d

First up is a Reaper Bones 77020: Bathalian painted as Prince John from Disneys Robin Hood

Prince-John-Robin-Hood

This is a pre-kickstarter Bones I got sometime in 2013. I have painted and repainted, based and rebased this mini several times, never being satisfied with it. Still not entirely happy, but there it is.

I made a rough Ermine collar and backpiece in green stuff, together with a rudimentary crown. And that is about where my green stuffing skills come to an end. Need to practice, practice, practice.

At any rate, this one is intended for the Reaper Forums “You’re Such a Character” competition, where we are to do a Reaper mini to “cosplay” some character or other.

30mm base, Bones.

2. Mantic Deadzone Marauder Mawbeast.

150405 Deadzone fleabag a150405 Deadzone fleabag b

This metal Marauder Mawbeast was delivered in the second wave, together with a bunch of characters all in metal.
This Mawbeast differs from the restic ones in the original Marauders set in that it does not have any techno-gubbins on it, nor the chainsaw blade in it’s mouth. It could equally well be used in a Fantasy setting.

At any rate, I thought it looked like a lion, what with the mane and all. So I painted it like one. Rawrr.

Mars Attacks!

For March I am still doing squads,

150322 mars attacks grunts squad

this one is from Mars Attacks, a squad of Martian grunts. 9 new ones, 1 finished previously.

I have not bothered with slicing off the mould lines on these. The results are actually acceptable anyhow.

25 mm integral bases. Softish PVC material.

Bonus round 5!

150322 dz freya 1150322 dz freya bak

Deadzone Mercenary: Freya, a  Forge Father (or is it supposed to be Forge Mother when they are female? That is a can of worms Mantic did not think of when they named their space dwarfs race!)

25mm base, restic

Bonus Round 6 and 7:

150322 dbx robot striker 150322 dbx robot guard
