It’s Terraining Men: The Oathsworn Ruined Tower

Almost a month has swept past with no new minis painted because life.

With my 3D printer currently clogging up every time I try to print and now in stasis awaiting a new nozzle, I thought it might be time to get some terrain done and dusted.

We start with somthing that is not 3d printed, but has been sitting around taking up space on my to-do shelved.

The husband and wife-run company Oathsworn Miniatures have been doing kickstarter after kickstarter, many of which include the option of pledging for some ace resing terrain made and hand cast by the lovely and talented Jo.

In their secoond Burrows and Badgers KS “FreeLances”, the main resin bits were a three part ruined bell tower:

The main piece is about 20cms long, the ruined bits of wall and cracked bell-pieces are about 15cms long.

There were also some strip-shaped pieces with barrels and chests and such in this KS, but those are for another day.

bonus:

30mm base. about 50mm tall.

This is a piece from Axolote’s recent 3d KS that I printed as a test. It is actually a part to put on top of a cave dungeon tile, it has a butterfly-shaped hole underneath to match a stud on the tiles. I selected this for printing both to test the Axolote file and my printer that has started to clog up more often. It printed well enough, I think I printed it at .01 mm layer height.

At any rate, I had it lying about when I painted the bell tower parts, and used some of the leftover paint on my palette to paint it, as it would be useful to see what the 3D printed piece would look like when drybrushed.

For one thing, the print lines did become more prononced. Still I dont really think the print lines matter much because they are only really noticeable when viewed close up. And pictures being rather in-your-face close up do make the lines look much worse than they are.

At any rate, one lesson to take from this is to go easy on drybrushing 3d printed items to not make the print lines more pronounced.

Year’s End: #366! Going big with RAGNAROKK!

Early this year I stated my year’s target challenge goal thingy to best the 2015 total of 270 and go all out to paint one for each day, 366 miniatures in all!

And lo, even with several week long painting pauses and doing other things; already early December we pass this number! Hoody Hoo!

So we go with the biggest of the large ones just for the hell of it!

Ragnarokk the Rokk monster! I got this “miniature” from a kickstarter by Acheson Creations. Acheson produce a load of how to put it …roughly detailed resin castings. But I really liked this one, and pledged for it on their 2013 kickstarter, and was delivered after the obligatory KS delays of several months… I have had it undercoated black on my top shelf some time (as it won’t fit on any of the lower shelves!)

An aside: I do not think I actually own the usual Sir Justin Forscale miniature, I went with Conan, as he is the measure of a man!

As is evident from the pictures, Ragnarokk is absolutely HUGE, at 24cm tall and a 12,5cm integral base!

Talk about your Greater Earth Elemental!

Valandor, not-Drizzt and the necromancer

The kickstarter exclusive resin Hero:

160318 mantic dungeon saga keldan elf fighter

Keldan the Elf FIghter. Not Drizzt at all. No, siree!

For some reason I did not get a proper Dungeon Saga base for this mini. I used instead a 25mm mantic base with an old Norwegian coin in the hole. This mini proves that Mantic could make high end minis if they chose to do so. (another thing to note, this elf stands a full head taller than Madriga and the other heroes, even taller than the barbarian. So Mantic certainly have some issues with scale. This one is so much more everything than Mantics older, rather weedy and thin elves. If all their elves had this stature, I think most of the criticism and hate towards them would go away.

Valandor the MIghty Hero of Ages Past

Boy did that spear arrive as a S-shaped noodle! Straightened out a charm in hot water and a gentle pulling when dunking in the cold water.

I went with green for this one, as Silver and Blue is over done. The cloak is paint Reaper Maggot White, a very whiteish green, but only looks white in the picture. Now he is ready to take on the red demon.

Prepping the days away

For the most part, the last couple of weeks have been spent doing prepwork:

The Dungeon Saga minis are now undercoated and ready for some brush action

160209 dungeon saga prep

a bunch of Mantic restic kits from the Kings of War kickstarters. God, these take AGES to prep what with the gazillion small pieces, all the big mould lines and properties of the restic itself, the mouldlines not wanting to be scraped off at all.

160209 restic hell

so best to get them done once and for all. Some Trolls, Lesser Obsidian Golems, Goblin Fleabag riders, Dwarf Brock Riders and resin Earth Elemental. Just needing some primer and a bit of basing.

Still have a bunch of different restic units from the first KS sitting in their little bags until the day I can be botheres to prep them. This lot has turned me off the restic prepwork for a while!

160209 burrows & badgers 2 KS

Burrows and Badgers: Freelancers (the full set from the second B&B KS, with resin terrain.) And what a great set of terrain it is! I will go more into these when I get around to painting them.

Space Hurps done for now

About a year ago, I bought a set of Mantic old convert-your-own sci fi zombies off ebay, and combined with the plague zombie sprues I got from the deadzone kickstarter I spent a day building a ton of them.

They have been cluttering up my to do-shelf ever since, only being nickled-and-dimed  in small groups, getting in the way and generally being a nuisance.

So I decided that enough is enough. Here are the last 18:

160122 mantic space hurps zombies 18 group

which brings the total up to 63 of the poor space hurps sufferers:

160122 mantic space hurps zombies 63 group

But is this a Herd, or a Horde?

Leviathan Hellhounds

160106 Leviathan Hell Hounds

This pair of demon dogs have been half-painted for something like 15 years or so. They have been lying about in a box until I found them the other day.

I have based them and finished them off, keeping to the same colour scheme as I used for a unit many, many moons ago. Not great, but serviceble for the tabletop.

Unfinished business, or: the remainder of the 2015 painting output.

This being a belated catch-up post to round off last year with what I managed to squeeze in the last days of 2015:

So…after 100+ hours travelling the Commonwealth and murdering almost every one and every thing I come across, playing the main quest to several different conclusions… I have at last managed to put Fallout 4 down and no longer play it as compulsively as I did most of December. Now all I need to do is to not start over now that I know what is useful and what is not in the game…

Which means I got to round off 2015 with some more hastily painted minis!

First, something hot:

151231 BnB fire

The Campsite Fire from Oathsworn Heroes KS resin scatter terrain, (I need to say that it looks much better IRL, with more sculpted detail than is apparent in the photo).

151231 reaper fire

77080: Wall of Fire from Reaper Bones KS2. This piece is made in orange coloured transparent Bones PVC.

Obviously, I still struggle with fire.

Oh well, I still have a few more of the transparent Bones to practice with.

Both on 30mm Bases. The Oathsworn one is integral.

next up are the DreadBall Xtreme Scoring Posts (or whatever they are called)

151231 dreadball scoring posts

These are the goals in DreadBall Xtreme. They are seperate pieces because of the varying pitch layouts you can have in the game.

Yes, they are rather simply painted, I just had the need to get these off the shelf.

I still have a ton of other bits like crates and barrels from that game to do whenever I get around to it, not to mention similar bits from DeadZone.

Reaper Bones Shadow

Another experiment on a transparent Bones. this time the 77369: Shadow.

This one is transparent Purple and I tried to give it a kind of gradient with several colours, but I do not think it worked all that well. I need to put it in front of a bright light to see any of the colours.

I tried to highlight it with a careful drybrush, but that just ruined it further.

I think it might have worked much better if it was clear transparent instead of purple, since the purple is quite dark in itself.

Live and learn.

Harlequin Miniatures Lizardmen:

151231 Lizardmen small 151231 Lizardmen large 1 151231 Lizardmen large 2

Three old lead Lizardmen by Harlequin Miniatures round off the year. I found some in the old stash some time ago. For some reason, I really like these minis, even though they are a bit rough in the details.

Keeping it simple, done in much the same colour scheme as the Raptors I did earlier in the year. The shield on the smaller one is not the original for that model (which I could not find).

So how did 2015 go?

When I started out 2015 I posted some new years resolutions:

1. Not to buy any miniatures (ebay or otherwise) apart from kickstarters unless said miniatures are funded by my own ebay sales.

I actually managed this one! I sold alot of old stuff on Ebay, and used the money from that for my outside of KS spending. There were just a few purchases from ebay, and the only store purchase was the Age of Sigmar box set. As far as I remember that is.

However…there were many kickstarters…and I think I spent a bit much. Again. But I did manage to not go bananas in the Warpath KS. Maybe I will manage to restrain myself in the pledge manager as well.  There was something I cannot quite out my finger on about that one that made me dial it down to a single dollar.

2. Paint some minis every month

Check. The Reapermini.com forum “resolutionary painting challenge” as a good help here.

3.  Try to complete a project / set of minis / squad before starting another.

I think maybe I will call this a “partial success” as I have completed many squads this year, but no complete armies and no complete game sets. Still have some Shadows of Brimstone left to do before I can say that.

I am rather flighty, and have many different projects started that really are going nowhere…So this one really never had any hope.

Total painted in 2015: 276

I don’t think that is a bad number at all. Of course, I tend towards a sloppyfast “tabletop+” finish, the + being that I go a step or two beyond block colours and I like to do the face and eyes.

I will be interesting to see what 2016 will bring!

(I just got three big boxes from three different Kickstarters -Dungeon Saga, Zombiecide Black Plague, and the last of the first Cthulhu Wars KS… so I am not lacking in things to paint!)
