Slow going

I have been doing other stuff these last couple of weeks, not much time spent painting. I have only managed to get a few done for the reaper challenge league.

Left to right:

The early Chewbacca concept, er, Bugbear.

A bust by Tytan Troll, 3D printed on my Elegoo Mars Pro.

As is evident in the back picture, I really need to dial in my printer better. After several failed prints, I now tend to use way to heavy supports, which for this model has caused a severe case of the divots on the back side when I ripped them off instead of snipped them off as I usually do. The prints very rarely fail anymore though.

This was painted for the Limited Palette Challenge, this month being Orange, Green and Black in addition to White and Black.
I used Nightmare Black, which is a very dark blue that mixes beautifully to lighter blues, while Mint Green is more of a light turquoise that goes to sandy yellow(!) when mixed with the Lava Orange and a spot of white, so I can get both flesh colours and blondish hair by mixing those carefully. (Actually, sloppily. Mix to see what I get, use some black or white to darken or lighten until something useful shows up.) It is a very good way to learn your paints and get an innate understanding of colour theory.

To be honest, there is no way that this mini would have gotten painted without such a challenge.
This mini isn’t exactly a best seller. I can count the amount of pictures of this mini painted on google image with three fingers. I hereby add one to the count.
This model was one of the very few minis that did not get unpacked, prepped and undercoated back in the days I did that with almost everything else from Bones 2. It even went up for sale when I had a bout of selling off unwanted minis. Obviously, it did not sell.

I dug it out of storage and prepped it some time ago when I started painting “all the mounted Bones kickstarter models” but it did not come as far as getting painted even then.

Now a limited paint challenge is a good one to get anything done, since I tend to paint a model for such a challenge in a single sitting as I have the chosen paints on my palette, and I mix as I go. This also means the paint job tends to be a bit rough. But that is fine. The models aren’t being entered into Golden Demon or Crystal Brush in any case.

I tried for a Hagpie, but I am not entirely convinced this comes across as that. A magpie is all black and white, and here I needed some color, going into blues and greens.
