The Great Goblin of the Misty Mountains

Down, down to Goblin Town! Time for another stab at the Great Goblin.

The first time around, I bungled up the skin colour completely, leaving the Great Goblin a dank, purplish mess. Especially as the thing is mostly skin.

Disgusted with my failure, I threw the mini into the Drawer of Shame to fester for many months.

Time to set things right, this second try to fix the skin turned out better. Too bad I could not be arsed to fill and smooth the lines from where the parts went together.

Now it can lead the matching Goblins Town Goblins I painted last year.

Moria Goblin …Spitters?

I have for some time been collecting loads of Lord of the Rings goblins and orcs, almost enough to make a Kings of War army…or two. I need to get some cavalry and such though.

But for some reason I have not really goten round to actually start painting them. Gahd, there are alot!

Methinks it’s time to break the spell.

The first 10 Moria Goblin archers,

They did turn out rather darker than I would have liked.

Next time, remember to use lighter base colours.

Ringwraiths; or playing around with colours for black cloaks

Again some simple paint jobs, this time around I am trying out some colour combinations for dark cloaks, that are supposed to be black. But painting black straight up black really does not work all that well, the minis simply become…Not sure how to put this…lesser?

I have a really nice black cloaked figure lined up for painting, but painting it straight black will not do it justice. So I am using some Ringwraiths from Lord of the Rings by Citadel as guinea pigs:

150829 Nazgul 1

I think the Blue one worked best as “Black”.

I wanted to keep them looking as a unit, so I did not go hog wild. They were each painted with a different undercoat, a very dark version of their respective colour. Then given a liberal wash of Army Painter Dark Coat Quickshade Ink and left to dry. When dry they were all given a drybrush of dark grey followed by a light drybrush at the edges with a lighter grey. Using same colours for the drybrushes gives them a coherent, unified look.  They will work great as a unit of wraiths (or even the Necromancer himself)  in Kings of War as well as Sauron’s personal SWAT team.

The backdrop worked very well. The colours turned out much more like in real life in the pictures than ever before. And the “auto color” global colour adjusting function in Photoshop barely changed the colour values, which has to be a good sign.

March resolution: the second installment

As previously stated, my resolution for March is to complete at least 4 10-man squads, or equivalent.

I have been a bit under the weather this week, and so have not done as much as I had hoped. Plus, Bones 2 has arrived! Not to easy to concentrate on boring old hat when all the new shiny is *sparkling*…

150308 brimstone stranglers group

at any rate, I have completed the group of Stranglers from Shadows of Brimstone. No prize for spotting the inspiration for the colour schemes.

30mm bases, HIPS plastic

So that’s 5 more squaddies down.

In addition, 5 more of the Space Hurps-ridden zombies:

Which makes 10 squaddies in all, enough for the resolution target this week.

25mm bases, HIPS plastic / restic conversions.

But wait there’s more!

Bonus round 2:

150308 dreadball xtreme nameless bloodsucker

 DreadBall Xtreme Nameless Bloodsucker

Not very pleased about the shininess, which is due to the old inks used.

Hexbase, restic

Bonus round 3:

Ral Partha Swamp thingy AD&D Dark Sun Anakor (RPE 11-715)

I had to ask on the Reaper forum to find out what this one was. Turns out it is Dark Sun (a desert setting) which means the original lives nowhere near a swamp!

Bonus Round 4:

150308 LOTR ringwraith

I find black cloaks often look better when painted dark, dark grey with black washes.
